Book Review: Unlikely Friends

It’s not often I share anything other than makeup and nail posts but today I have something fun to share!

Unlikely Friends is a children’s book by David Dilsizian based on the friendship between the icon of the 1950’s, Marilyn Monroe, and jazz superstar, Ella Fitzgerald. As a huge Marilyn fan I was very happy to be sent a preview copy to share with you all.

I haven’t seen any other children’s stories about Marilyn so this seems very unique. The book is a sweet story of kindness and friendship, and a great read for little ones! The illustrations by Mykyta Harets are an adorable pairing too.

Back in the 1950s popular jazz club, the Mocambo, wouldn’t book Ella Fitzgerald to perform. Marilyn, who was a fan of Ella’s, stepped in to help her. In 1972 I believe, Ella said in an interview: “ I owe Marilyn a real debt. She personally called the owner of the Mocambo, and told him she wanted me booked immediately, and if he would do it, she would take a front table every night. She told him – and it was true, due to Marilyn’s superstar status – that the press would go wild. The owner said yes, and Marilyn was there, front table, every night. The press went overboard. After that, I never had to play a small jazz club again. She was an unusual woman, a little ahead of her times, and she didn’t know it.”

A great story, I’m sure you will agree!

Spring Glow With Makeup Revolution

Seeing as Spring is officially here what better time to share some beautiful highlighters from Makeup Revolution to help get that fresh glowing look! I’ve loved their Vivid Baked highlighter in Peach Lights for so long that I knew I had to have some more from other collections.

Radiant Lights Glow is a gorgeous warm highlighter. The texture is so soft and smooth, it glides on beautifully! This has a very intense golden colour so would work incredibly as a highlighter over blush on darker skin tones but for my pale skin I wear this alone as a glowing bronzer. It also works lovely as eyeshadow!

Moon Glow from the Strobe Highlighters is my new favourite, even taking the place of my Peach Lights, which was hard to do! This has a softer, almost matte glow so is my go-to for every day wear. The lovely pink tone is perfect for my skin tone and blends well over a variety of blush shades. This also has a more velvety texture that feels very light on the face. Definitely a plus as the weather warms up!

Recent Barry M Purchases: Swatches Included

It seems like forever since I last shared a nail post. My job has really taken its toll on my nails which is why I’ve moved towards more makeup and vintage posts. But seeing as my nails weren’t too bad last week I thought I would snap a few photos of my recent Barry M purchases.

The Gelly Paints are my absolute favourite polishes so I picked up Acai Smoothie which is from last year’s Spring/Summer release. This is a really gorgeous dusky mauve colour unlike anything in my collection. The formula applies perfectly, as with all the Gelly paints. This is two coats and no top coat.

I’ve been looking at swatches of the new Frosted Cupcakes collection since it was released and couldn’t resist grabbing one for myself. I chose Strawberries and Cream which is a soft blush pink. This is packed with crystal flakies but unfortunately getting them to show up was a little tricky. These photos definitely don’t do the sparkle any justice. I’m wearing two coats here with no top coat.

I’m constantly impressed with Barry M’s polishes and these two are no exception. Which of these is your favourite?

Makeup Revolution: Retro Luxe Matte Lip Kit

Today I have another review to share! This time I’m talking about Makeup Revolution’s Retro Luxe Lip Kit in the shade Regal.

The lip kit comes with a liquid lipstick and matching lip liner.

With any matte lip, preparation is key for a smooth finish. I always exfoliate and moisturise my lips before using any matte products as they will cling to any dry or rough patches, and this liquid lipstick is no exception.

I’ve read some bad things about the lip liner but I was very impressed with it. The formula is creamy, glides on smoothly and was easy to blend. The liquid lipstick is very pigmented. One coat was perfect for full coverage! The colour is very pretty too. Regal is an almost burnt orange toned red. Very vintage-inspired so, of course, I love it!

I found the lipstick went matte quickly but it never fully dried. It stayed slightly tacky which meant my lips sort of stuck together a little. I didn’t find this to be a huge issue but I’m sure some people would not be happy about it.

As for long lasting wear, unfortunately this did not live up to my expectations. Although it was transfer proof, after about an hour or so it started to flake off from my inner lips.

I definitely expected more from this lip kit, but they colour is very pretty. Not a long lasting product in my opinion but I usually have to reapply almost every lipstick anyway so it doesn’t put me off too much.

Have you tried any of Makeup Revolution’s lip kits?

I Heart Makeup: Golden Bar Palette

Last month I made a Makeup Revolution order and thought it was about time I share a few reviews of the products I got. First up I want to talk about the Golden Bar palette from I Heart Makeup.

I originally wanted the Chocolate and Peaches palette but by the time I had finished choosing everything it had sold out. Luckily there are so many incredible palettes that I knew there would be something else I would love. And I definitely made the right decision with the Golden Bar!

I Heart Makeup’s range of chocolate bar palettes are really gorgeous, but the Golden Bar definitely stands out from the rest with the eye catching gold drips! I love that there is a full size mirror in the lid and a sponge applicator. Though I’m not sure anyone even uses those to apply eye makeup?!

There is also a plastic sheet with the names on covering the shadows. I like to keep this in the palette as it’s great for keeping fallout off the mirror. I also like to know what I’ve used so if it turns out well I know how to recreate it.

I have to admit, I am easily swayed by pretty packaging, and sometimes that can mean wasting money on products that really aren’t worth it. Luckily you don’t have to worry about that with the Golden Bar! Each eyeshadow is great quality. They are very pigmented and easy to blend, even for a beginner like me!

I am by no means an expert when it comes to eye makeup but I am trying to move out of my comfort zone slightly and this palette is perfect for so many looks!

Have you tried any of I Heart Makeup’s Chocolate Bar palettes?

W7 Hollywood Bronze & Glow

W7 Hollywood Bronze and Glow palette has been my go to for the last couple of months and as you can see, I have definitely loved it!

The bronze shade has a subtle shimmer to it so I don’t always pair it with the highlighter, it looks amazing all by itself! It also looks great on my fair skin as it’s cool tone, it blends well and lasts all day. What more could you ask for?!

The highlighter is a fantastic gold shimmer that is very buildable, so whether you’re going for a soft glow or want to shine like the sun, this can make that happen!

I definitely recommend this palette! The quality is fantastic and the packaging is cute too.

There are a lot of these contour and highlight palettes around to suit any budget but seeing as I recently bought the Golden Bar palette from I Heart Makeup it seems only right that when I replace this it will be with the Bronze and Glow palette with the same gorgeous chocolate bar packaging! What are your favourite bronze and grow products?

Bourjois Blusher: Swatches Included!

Today I thought I would share the love for some of my favourite blushers in my collection. If you follow me on instagram then there’s a good chance you’ve seen these Bourjois blushers as I’ve shared them in numerous flat lays.

I just love the packaging of these! They are so pretty and perfectly sized for popping in any bag. Each one has a mirror in the lid and a small brush. But best of all, they are the same colour as the blusher inside, which is fantastic. They are also beautifully scented, I know plenty of people prefer fragrance free products, but I think there is something quite luxurious about perfumed makeup, providing it’s not overpowering of course.

These shades are Golden Rose, Rose Amber and Ashes of Roses.

Golden Rose is a soft pink with gold highlight running through. I especially love this for Spring and Summer as it gives a really fresh glow.

Rose Amber is my most used from this set. It’s a matte peachy pink. Perfect for everyday!

Ashes of Roses is a matte dusky pink that has a lovely vintage feel to it.

Each of these blushers are incredible! The only negative thing about these is that the colours are very intense. Not really a bad thing I know, in fact, it’s exactly what you want from makeup! But if you’re like me and tend to be a little heavy handed when it comes to applying your blusher then you definitely need to be more careful with these. A little goes a long way with these little round pots!

My Current Nail Care Favourites

The most important step in getting a beautiful mani is nail care! I’ve yet to find my perfect products for keeping my hands and nails healthy, I usually swap between the various things I have hoping to find a better combination. Today I’m sharing the three products I’m loving most right now!

First up is Makeup Gallery’s cuticle oil. I firmly believe price is not an indication of quality and this definitely proves it. At only £1 it’s a real bargain and works just as well as more expensive oils I’ve tried. The best thing about this is that it has more of a ‘dry oil’ formula and absorbs very quickly.

Avon Nail Experts Gold Strength is fantastic for days in between wearing colour polish. It helps improve the look of ‘bare’ nails by hiding ridges and giving a natural glow. I love wearing this for work when my nails are likely to get chipped as it keeps them looking healthy and the subtle shimmer is very pretty.

Lastly is Neutrogena concentrated hand cream. The formula of this is quite thick with a balm like feel on the skin. It absorbs well and does hydrate my hands. I’ve tried so many hand creams over the years and although I haven’t found the perfect one yet, this is definitely one of the best.

Perfect In Pink

Picking a nail polish when you have so many can be difficult and as much as I love wearing all different colours, if I’m not in the mood for searching through my collection I mostly end up grabbing a trusty pink shade. Whether I’m feeling a bold or pastel look, there is always a perfect pink.

Here are the three I’ve been reaching for most recently!

What I love most about these are the impressive drying times! All my most used polishes are ones that get my nails looking pretty without having to sit around for ages.

These are Make Up Gallery’s Candy Pink which is a creamy mid pink shade, Orly’s Cotton Candy which is a warm toned pastel that looks great even with my pale skin and Max Factor’s Forever Glam which is a rich pink with subtle violet shimmer.

What are your favourite pinks?

First Impressions: Avon Gel Shine

Avon polishes are some of my favourites in my collection. They have a wide range of colours, and a variety of finishes. For my birthday back in December I received 5 of the Gel Shine polishes so thought I would share my first impressions of them.

As you can see I got a fantastic mix of shades! Each one is really beautiful, there’s not one I wouldn’t wear. These are Purplicious, Fabulous, Emerald City, Rain Washed and Lavender Sky.

I’ve found these great so far. They apply easily and look beautifully opaque after two coats. I’ve found the trying time quick too which is a definite bonus for me! The glossy finish of these is rather impressive as you would expect, though I do think I prefer Barry M Gelly Paints for a more lasting shine.

My favourites of these are Lavender Sky and Fabulous.
