On this day in 1954, Marilyn Monroe wed baseball star Joe DiMaggio at San Francisco City Hall.

Marilyn was one of the most glamorous stars at the time, however, rather than wearing an extravagant gown she opted for a conservative but chic brown suit with fur collar. Most probably this was to please her new husband who was uncomfortable with the attention Marilyn received from the press and the public, especially regarding her fashion choices.

The two stars had a turbulent marriage, divorcing after just 9 months, in October of 1954.

Although the relationship was over they were seen socialising after their divorce. Joe was even her date for the premiere of The Seven Year Itch which took place on Marilyn’s 29th birthday, June 1st 1955.

Marilyn and Joe remained friends until the end of her life, with Marilyn turning to him for support in her later years and even though their romantic relationship didn’t last, Joe’s love for Marilyn certainly never faded. After her death in 1962, Joe arranged for roses to be delivered to her crypt every week for 20 years. It’s reported that his final words before he died in 1999 were “I’ll finally get to see Marilyn.”
